Curly hair naturally tangles more than straight hair because the curls wrap around one another. This is true of your natural hair and equally true of your extensions. Understanding this is the first step to protecting them.

After thousands of successful installs — and a small number that did not go as planned — we dug into what separated them. When some clients are thriving and others aren't, the batch isn't the issue. The six principles below are what we found.
The six non-negotiables
Rule 01
Clarify every 3 washes
Product and mineral buildup is the fastest way to lose curl definition. Use a clarifying shampoo every third wash, then follow immediately with a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture.

Rule 02
No sulfates. No silicones. No exceptions.
Sulfates strip the hair shaft. Silicones coat it, blocking moisture and causing buildup that suffocates the curl over time. Check every product label before it touches your extensions.
Rule 03
Cold water rinse — after conditioning
Hot water opens the cuticle and causes the weft to swell, leading to frizz, tangling, and texture loss. Always finish with a cold water rinse after conditioning to seal the cuticle and preserve the curl pattern.

Rule 04
Keep the weft dry after styling and before bed
Because curly hair is styled wet, this is about the weft itself — not your strands. Moisture trapped at the seam can cause hairs to tighten around the stitching, leading to matting at the attachment point. Fully dry after styling and before sleep.
Rule 05
Finger detangle only — never brush dry
Dry brushing disrupts the curl clump, causes irreversible frizz, and creates tension at the weft. Always detangle section by section when saturated with conditioner and never against the weft direction.

Rule 06
Do not straighten Signature Steam extensions
The Signature Steam Collection has been through two separate processes to achieve its curl pattern. Straightening heat works against both, shortening the life of the hair significantly. If you need versatility between straight and curly, Temple Luxe is the right choice.

Common questions
Can I use my regular shampoo and conditioner?
We recommend sticking with the brands above. Many back bar products — especially in salons that specialize in blowouts and heat straightening — do not properly hydrate curly extensions. These formulas are built around smoothing straight textures, not supporting curl structure. The products we recommend have been vetted by trusted curly hair educators and are ones we know work well for our extensions specifically. When in doubt, use what we know.
How long should my extensions last?
It depends on the collection. Our Signature Steam extensions typically last 6–10 months due to the double processing involved in achieving the curl pattern — and sometimes shorter for lighter, tighter textured styles. Our Temple Luxe line, which is donor-sourced and not steam-set, can last 12 months or longer with proper care. In both cases, lifespan is directly tied to how consistently you follow the care routine and how often you return to your stylist for maintenance.
What if something seems wrong when I receive my order?
Contact us before your first wash and before cutting the zip ties from the hair. Once the zip ties are removed and the hair has been installed or washed, we are unable to process a return or exchange.
